You always have an option to publish it yourself for free at online publishers like lulu.com, and you can order so many hardbound or paperbacks.

You can do your own promotion and networking.

Many bookstores will stock local authors.

It’s the "without spending money" part that’s tough! You have to come to the attention of a book publisher. There are numerous online and printed guides to publishers and agents. A legitimate publisher will not ask for any money from you, nor will an agent. In fact, a publisher will pay an upfront advance on royalties after the contract is signed. (Try http://www.writersmarket.com.)

I should add it is very difficult to get fiction started. I had a nonfiction book published several years ago but have not yet found an outlet for my novel. Sometimes it’s easier to get started publishing short pieces in magazines, establishing a record before approaching a book publisher. Writers Market also has magazine outlets. Good luck!

The best thing to do is network. Let as many people as you can know that he writes. You never know who might know somebody in publishing.
Try to find a literary agent. If you find a professional who believes in your work and fights for you, s/he will be worth the 10% when s/he gets you published.
There are writer’s conferences and workshops online. You could start attending these and meet people that way. Many authors attend these and will read your manuscript. Usually with these there is a fee involved, but look at the individual options and judge for yourself. They could be worth it.
You can always try submitting a manuscript "over the transom" at some respected publishing house. This is a long shot, but so is everything else when it comes to getting published. People really do read the unsolicited works, even though you may have to wait a long time.
Whatever you do, don’t get involved with vanity publishers. You should never have to pay a publisher. The publisher pays you.
    Good luck.

Let me be honest with you: Most publishing houses – traditional or self-publishing – instill financial obligations, if only to keep their business running
